Two plans can look similar and still cover very different things. Use this checklist to compare them side by side.
1. Match the plan to your trip
- Destination, trip length and trip cost
- Who is traveling and their ages
- Activities you plan to do
2. Compare coverage limits
- Emergency medical limit and whether it includes emergency transport
- Trip cancellation and interruption limits
- Baggage and travel delay limits
3. Read the exclusions
- Pre-existing conditions and how the policy defines them
- Activities that are limited or excluded
- Events that are not covered
4. Check costs and rules
- Deductible or co-payment
- Price for your age and trip length
- Deadlines to buy, for example within a set time after your first trip payment, if the plan has that rule
5. Look at the claims process
- How to file a claim and what documents you need
- Time limits for filing
- Customer support options during your trip

Download the full policy document and read it. If something is unclear, ask the insurer or a licensed professional.
